About Troops 82
Whether you are a prospective Scout or parent or an existing member of the Troop, we aim to ensure you feel safe and welcome. We're still in the process of building this area and really appreciate feedback.
Who We Are
Troop 82 was originally established in 1963, and has roots going back prior to statehood. During that time it has had a number of different flavors and incarnations. Until 2022 it was generally chartered to the Turnagain United Methodist Church in West Anchorage, and that is where it held its meetings and occasionally its events. Troop 82 was supported and sustained for many years by TUMC and its generosity, and particularly the indomitable Scout Spirit of "Bud" Walters, a TUMC congregant and Scout champion. Troop 82 honors Bud's legacy and recognizes the unpayable debt owed to him.
Between 2020 and 2022, T82 was in limbo and its membership reflected that. It was not clear where, or whether, it would be chartered. Eventually its membership dropped to 0 active Scouts. Around the same time, BSA opened itself to all youth and adults. Troop 82 created a sister Troop (originally Troop 2082, now Troop 82G and the original Troop 82 has been redesignated Troop 82B). Since then, Troops 82 have had significant success with recruitment and staying active. In 2023, Troop 82 was chartered directly to the Great Alaska Council.
Where we meet
We meet in the Turnagain neighborhood of West Anchorage
We meet from 5:00 - 6:15pm on Frieday nights all year long. We do our best to respect our Scouts' and Scouters' time, so arriving and departing promptly is an important element of the meeting.
Monthly Outings
Each month the Troop goes on an outing. Particularly because most of our Scouts are young, these vary widely. This year we have gone on or have planned:
- 4-day campouts (leaving Wednesday and returning Saturday);
- 3-day campouts (leaving Friday and returning Sunday);
- Overnights (usually Saturday to Sunday, although when ASD has a planned day off on Friday we overnight then);
- Single day adventures (almost always on Saturday or school holiday).
We try to plan our entire program year in advance and get notice well in advance to the Committee (that's all the adults involved in directing and supporting the Troop).
Summer camp
Troop 82 attends a week-long summer camp each year alternating between in-Council (Camp Gorsuch on Mirror Lake or Camp Eagle River in Juneau) and out-of-Council (Midnight Sun camp near Fairbanks or a camp Outside). In 2024 we will be attending Camp Eagle River.
How to Join
Ready to join the adventure? Because of BSA chartering rules, Troop 82 is actually a combination of two troops that meet and do activities together. For more information, or to join online, please visit the troop information center for girls or for boys..
